St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church in Kaarma

One of the oldest churches in Saaremaa and whole Western Estonia.  In this 13th century Gothic church there are mural paintings, stone sculptures as well as a baptismal stone. From that time period stem also some of the polychrome wooden sculptures.

Allegedly the text on the stone table in the tower wall could be the first written record of Estonian language.

Originally the purpose of this church was protection, it even had no tower.  The history of the vicarage can also be traced down to the Middle Ages. Today, the St Peter´s and St Paul´s Lutheran congregation is situated in the vicarage.
