St Mary's Lutheran Church in Pöide

The biggest Medieval Gothic-style church in Western Estonia.

The first version of Pöide chapel was ready in 1230. This was a fortress without a tower and with one unvaulted nave. From this period only a part of the side walls and the southern side of the fortress, which used to be one of the portals.

The current building of Pöide Church is believed to be built about hundred years later on the remains of  the Pöide fortress. This fortress was destroyed by the Saaremaa natives during the wave of uprisings against the occupying forces that took place in Estonia and Saaremaa during St.George's Night Uprising of 1343. The building was looted and burnt during World War II and also used as a storage building. The building suffered severe damages in fire in 1940,  when lightning struck the tower.
